ONE PIECE AT A TIME
GATESHEAD AS PART OF TSWA 3D, 1987

1200 second hand car parts were suspended by wires from a platform mounted in the roof of the tower. Over a period of 5 weeks a motorised cutting mechanism cut approximately 40 wires per day, causing the car components to crash to the floor. The sound of the falling metal was recorded, layering actual sounds of falling material with previously recorded noise. At the end of the exhibition all of the car parts had fallen to the ground leaving only the accumulated sound of the 1200 components falling.
